Admission requirements

  • Application and $50 fee. Apply online.
  • A baccalaureate degree in any major (except 'Education' from a California university or college). Your degree must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Passing grade or registration for the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or an alternative option for the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)
  • Passing grade or registration for the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) or an alternative option for Subject Matter Competency approved by the CTC
  • One official copy of transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.  Mail official transcripts to KSOE, PMB 4350, Moraga, CA 94575-4350. 
  • Statement of professional goals and resume included with your application
  • Three current letters of recommendation from professionals who can evaluate your potential to be a Special Education teacher
  • Evidence of health insurance (and/or a signed waiver)
  • Results of a tuberculin test (within the last four years)
  • Interview with Program Director.

Prior to program start

All applicants must have a Certificate of Clearance (or the equivalent) issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), or an application pending, before being admitted to the program.

Foreign Transcripts

Individuals who have completed college or university course work at an institution in a country other than the United States must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts, degrees, and other relevant documents by one of the approved CTC organizations for admittance into the program.
